Now for the real news, in (rough) chronological order:
Luke and Thomas had a great week in Cooperstown. His team did fine, they finished in the top half. Thomas and Luke enjoyed visiting the Baseball Hall of Fame and found a restaurant with amazing burgers. They both really enjoyed the weather and change of scenery with being in New York. Luke spent most of his free time playing wiffle ball with his friends and had a great time.

Jack came home from the summer term on July 30th. Thomas went up and got him (lots of driving for Thomas this summer). Jack ended up being pretty good friends with his roommate and he got As in both of his classes. He enjoyed being on campus with fewer students present. However, he wasn’t excited to go back. He kind of wished he had gone to Valencia with Anna or maybe UCF with a lot of his friends. He liked being in his own room and sleeping in his comfortable bed.
But Thomas and I dropped him off in Tallahassee for the Fall term on Friday (August 21). We got him moved in and spent some time with him on campus. Unfortunately, it appears as though he didn’t get as lucky in the roommate department as he did in summer. His roommate (also named Jack) is a night-owl, whereas our Jack is an early riser. And, it doesn’t seem like they have any interests in common. Hopefully, they will find some common ground. Fortunately, Jack said overall he seems like a nice person, so it could be much worse.
Both Jack and Anna started their classes today. Guess how Anna got to campus? In a car…that she drove herself! That’s right, she got her driver’s license! 3.5 years in the making, but when she finally had a real need, she decisively made it happen. She said she would do it before school started and she did. She did lessons with a driving school over the summer and I think it helped build her confidence. She got her license on Thursday and has already made multiple solo trips. It is nice having another driver in the house, although our insurance did go up another $347/month. Why oh why is it so expensive! Both kids said classes went well.
I've completely lost the chronological order at this point. But, moving on--Kara and Luke started school on August 18th. I can’t believe we have another Senior! Kara is doing 2 online classes with UF and then is on her high school campus for 3rd-6th periods. She enjoys going in late and leaving early. She has one fun elective—ceramics, and the rest are AP classes, including Calculus.
Luke got the two electives he was hoping for—Piano 2 and Information and Communications Technology. Kids in middle school are allowed to skip PE and leave a class early if they spend an equivalent number of hours in organized sports. Luke meets the requirement, but we had trouble finding a carpool. The first week was difficult with him getting home around 440 and having to leave at 5 for baseball. Then, one of my friends decided to let her son take the no-PE route. She had a neighbor doing it as well and they decided to alternate weeks driving and offered to include Luke! We are going to do Friday pickups, they are doing every other day. We are beyond lucky and Luke is incredibly thankful. Now, he is home around 330 everyday, leaving a little breathing room in his schedule.
Thomas and I have been busy at work. We both had protests which are really time-consuming. It’s where a contractor disagrees with the government’s decision in a source selection and files their disagreement (protest) with the Government Accountability Office. Oddly, they both arose from work we took on for other people. No good deed goes unpunished! I wouldn’t describe protests as either common or rare, but it is unusual for us to each have one at the same time. We both filed our answering reports last week and now we wait for the GAO to decide whether the Government acted properly.
Hmm, I guess that is it for now.
